2004 saw the release of Suunto’s hugely successful entry level dive computer, the Gekko. The Gekko provided the world with a feature rich computer for incredible value for money, in fact it featured all but a few extras found on Suunto’s more expensive Vyper.
Suunto, not a company who likes to sit around twiddling their thumbs, have announced the release of the Suunto Zoop which will be replacing the Gekko at the end of March. The Zoop (which is short for Zooplankton) is again targeted for the entry level market and will represent good value for money. The biggest change (other than the bold colour) is that the Zoop will feature a PC interface to allow dive profiles to be downloaded using Suunto’s optional Dive Manager.
The inclusion of the PC interface is most probably the reason for the price increase as the Zoop will be entering the market weighing in at £199.00 which means the price gap between the entry level Zoop and the bigger brother Vyper is significantly reduced.
Getting to the details, the Zoop has all the features from the Gekko including:
• Phosphorescent LCD Display
• Air and Nitrox modes
• Full decompression diving using Suunto’s RGBM Algorithm
• Built in Dive Planner
• User changeable battery
The key new features are:
• PC interface for use with the optional Dive Manager
• The very bold (but very visible) colour
With the upgrade to the Zoop the jump to the Vyper is now even closer both in terms on money and features. The difference between the Zoop and the Vyper now only includes the backlight and a dive simulator (not to be confused with the Dive Planner). You could almost argue that the Zoop not only replaces the Gekko but almost makes the Vyper redundant considering that you don’t get a lot more if you opt for the older Vyper.
